Vicky’s Alterations

Vicky's AlterationsVictoria Gutierrez had been sewing for twenty years in her garage before she opened her own business as a Plaza Vigil Incubator tenant. Originally from Jalisco, México, Mrs. Gutierrez has been living in Watsonville since 1988 with her family, raising her son and daughter. Mrs. Gutierrez always wanted to open an alterations shop. “My dream has come true,” she said as she looked around her shop full of clothes hanging and sewing machines whirring, “I am happy.”

Mrs. Gutierrez had a friend who told her about the Plaza Vigil Incubator Program. Mrs. Gutierrez thought it would be perfect for her business idea and applied to be accepted on the same day. She was interviewed by an El Pájaro CDC consultant and accepted into the business training program. The business training program teaches entrepreneurs how to start and operate a business, and how to expand and market their business. After taking the initial business training courses Mrs. Gutierrez was ready to open her shop. “I was surprised,” she said happily, “when I finished the program and there was a space in Plaza Vigil for me to open my business right away.” Mrs. Gutierrez opened Vicky’s Alterations in September 2007.

Having her own business changed her life. “Before I was always dreaming, dreaming, dreaming of owning my own business; now I am always busy, busy, busy with my business!” Mrs. Gutierrez has big plans for Vicky’s Alterations. In the future she would like to open up several locations, “here and here and here,” Mrs. Gutierrez pointed to places around the city. She also wants to teach sewing classes once she moves into a bigger space. “I’ve already started teaching,” Mrs. Gutierrez said as she pointed to her two employees, “but I want to get a bigger space and teach classes.”
